Sanlam Allianz (“we”, “us”, or “our”) values your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and protect your personal information when you use the Sanlam Allianz Uganda mobile application (the “App”). By using the App or creating an account, you consent to the practices described in this Privacy Policy.

1. Information We Collect

We collect information that helps us provide, improve, and secure our insurance services. This includes:

  • 1.1 Personal Information
    • Identification details: full name, date of birth, and gender.
    • Contact details: phone number and email address.
    • Government-issued identification: such as national ID, passport, or driving permit for identity verification.
    • Payment information: including mobile money or card payment references used to purchase policies.
  • 1.2 Usage Information

  • Device information (model, operating system, and app version).
  • Log data (IP address, login times, and actions performed in the App).
  • Location information (where relevant to provide travel insurance coverage).
  • 1.3 Information from Third Parties

We may receive information from:

  • Regulatory and verification bodies (e.g., NIRA, URA, or insurance databases).
  • Payment service providers for confirming transactions.
  • Our authorized partners and affiliates under Sanlam Allianz.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use your information to:

  • Create and manage your Sanlam Allianz account.
  • Verify your identity and prevent fraud.
  • Process and manage insurance policy applications and claims.
  • Communicate with you about policy updates, renewals, and service changes.
  • Improve and personalize the App’s features and services.
  • Comply with legal and regulatory obligations under Ugandan law.

3. Legal Basis for Processing

We process your data under the following legal grounds:

  • Contractual necessity: to provide and manage your insurance policy.
  • Legal obligation: to comply with insurance and financial regulations.
  • Legitimate interest: to improve our services and detect fraudulent activities.
  • Consent: when you voluntarily submit your identification or personal details within the App.

4. Information Sharing and Disclosure

We may share your information only as necessary with:

  • Sanlam Allianz Group companies for policy administration and claims management.
  • Regulatory authorities, including the Insurance Regulatory Authority of Uganda (IRA), when required by law.
  • Payment service providers to process premium payments or refunds.
  • Identity verification partners for confirming your identity documents.
  • IT service providers and cloud infrastructure providers who help us maintain and secure the App.

We do not sell or rent your personal information to third parties.

5. Data Retention

We retain personal information only as long as necessary to:

  • Fulfill the purpose for which it was collected,
  • Comply with legal and regulatory retention requirements, and
  • Resolve disputes or enforce agreements.

When data is no longer required, we securely delete or anonymize it.

6. Data Security

We implement technical and organizational measures to protect your data, including:

  • Encryption of sensitive information during transmission and storage,
  • Secure authentication and access control,
  • Regular system security assessments, and
  • Staff confidentiality agreements and training.

However, no system is completely secure. You are encouraged to protect your login credentials and notify us of any unauthorized account activity.

7. Your Rights

Under Uganda’s Data Protection and Privacy Act (2019), you have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you,
  • Request correction of inaccurate or incomplete data,
  • Withdraw consent (where processing is based on consent),
  • Request deletion of your data (subject to legal obligations), and
  • Object to processing for specific legitimate reasons.

Requests can be submitted through the App or by contacting our Data Protection Officer (see Section 11).

8. Children’s Privacy

Our services are not directed to individuals under 18 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from minors. If we discover such data has been collected, we will delete it immediately.

9. International Data Transfers

If your data is transferred outside Uganda (e.g., to Sanlam Allianz regional data centers), we ensure adequate safeguards are in place in line with applicable data protection laws and contractual requirements.

10. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Updates will be posted in the App and take effect immediately once published. You are encouraged to review this Policy regularly.
